Mission Statement
Empowering Women to be champions of peace; actively participating in development, improved livelihoods and the health of the society
OUR THEORY OF CHANGE
Our theory of change rests on the interconnectedness of peace, economic stability, social justice, and healthcare in creating an equitable and thriving society.
IF WERD implements programs to improve the livelihoods, food security, protection, health and education of women and youth, THEN women and youth will actively contribute to building sustainable peace and development in their society BECAUSE they will be economically empowered, educated, healthy, and have equal rights in the society.
Message from our
executive director
"As we reflect on nearly two decades of work in South Sudan, we at WERD remain deeply committed to empowering women, protecting children, and building peace. Established in 2007, during South Sudan's pivotal journey to independence, WERD was born out of the vision to support communities recovering from the scars of conflict. Today, we continue this mission, striving to heal the trauma of conflict, enhance food security, improve livelihoods, and foster resilience.
Our work is possible thanks to the unwavering support of our partners, donors, and the communities we serve. Together, we are building a South Sudan where every woman, child, and family can thrive in a peaceful and prosperous future.
Thank you for standing with us."
Elizabeth Mayiik, Executive Director, WERD.
SUCCESS STORIES
From Our Beneficiaries
"I now have a reason to look forward to sunrise, to wake up with a smile. My customers! My life was restricted to my house and the occasional visit to the market, but ever since WERD helped me to open this tea house, I get to laugh and talk with so many people, both strangers and old friends. It has opened my eyes to what brings us together as South Sudanese people"
S. M. Deng, Tea House owner in Adong.
"I would come to the market to buy a few things and rush back home because I felt like an outsider in that village. But when I started stopping for tea at the new hotel, I felt very welcome. I don't know why I feared that community, because when we sit and talk, I understand that we want the same thing, peace, good health and stable livelihoods."
A. K. Guol, Customer in Nyongkuach restaurant
"It has been getting harder and harder for my Mum to afford my pads from the shop. She has been working hard, but the price of everything is going up every day. But now I can take care of myself with this pad and the money Mom saves by not buying pads can do something else in the house"
C. G. Diu, Bailet
"I used to spend hours grinding maize and sorghum for my family, but now, it's just "brrrrrrrrrr" and I am done!! Now I can spend more time in the farm and in the market selling. It is good to have the extra money from the grinding mill, I can now save money for my first born who will start University next year"
L. G Kuol, Grind Mill operator, Abwong
